After Dark by Haruki Murakami

Excellent book.

The book After Dark by Haruki Murakami is a fascinating blend of postmodern storytelling and film noir set in the vibrant city of Tokyo. It follows the lives of two sisters, Eri and Mari, as they navigate the complexities of urban life.

The narrative depicts the intertwining lives of various characters throughout one night. It delves into the relationships between an old friend, an exploited Chinese prostitute, the proprietors of a “love hotel” who discovered her in distress, and the perpetrator of the abuse.

I must admit that the ending was a bit of a letdown. But then again, aren’t all film noir endings like that? It’s part of the charm.

As I delved into After Dark, I found it captivating to explore human existence after the sun sets and how our innermost selves evolve in the shadows.

While I was hoping for a more conclusive conclusion, the unexpected twist at the end was a delightful surprise that kept me engaged until the very last page.
